What Is In-Process Inspection?

In-process inspection is carried out while the steel is being produced or processed.

Depending on the product, inspectors may check dimensions, temperature, surface condition, rolling parameters, cutting accuracy, welding quality, coating condition, or other production variables.

The main advantage is early detection. If a problem is found before the next production stage, the manufacturer may be able to correct it before more material is affected.

For example, checking strip width during slitting can help prevent an entire batch of coils from being processed to the wrong size.

What Does Final Inspection Check?

Final inspection takes place after production and processing are complete.

At this stage, inspectors confirm whether the finished steel matches the purchase order and applicable specification. Typical checks may include dimensions, surface quality, quantity, marking, packaging, and documentation.

Depending on the order, final inspection may also review test certificates, mechanical test results, coating measurements, ultrasonic testing records, or other required reports.

This stage is essentially the final gate before shipment.

Why One Inspection Cannot Replace the Other

Final inspection can identify problems, but it cannot always explain when or where they happened.
